Among most renowned and valuable pieces of this period are those crafted by the Goddard Townsend family of Newport, Rhode Island. Quality signed pieces are highly desirable and values reflect this. A 1740 mahogany secretary bookcase made by Christopher Townsend sold at auction in New York for $8.25 million.
